Stripe vs. Square: Which One is Better for Your Clinic?

When choosing a payment provider for your clinic, both Stripe and Square offer in-clinic card payments, but Stripe Unified, in partnership with WriteUpp, provides lower transaction fees, automatic integration, and a smoother payment experience.

Comparing Transaction Fees: Stripe vs. Square

Stripe Terminal Fees (UK)Square Terminal Fees (UK)
✅ 1.4% + 10p per transaction for UK and EEA cards❌ 1.75% per transaction for all in-person card payments

Why Stripe is the Better Choice for WriteUpp Users

Lower Fees for UK & EEA Cards – Stripe charges 1.4% + 10p, compared to Square’s 1.75% flat rate. On a £100 transaction, that means:

  • Stripe: £1.40 + 10p = £1.50
  • Square: £1.75

Stripe saves you 25p per £100 transaction—which adds up fast for busy clinics!

More Competitive Rates – If you take payments from non-EEA cards, Stripe charges 2.9% + 10p, while Square charges 1.75% even for international cards. While Square is slightly lower here, the majority of UK clinics process mainly UK and EEA payments, where Stripe is the better deal overall.

A Complete Payment Solution – With Stripe Unified, you can take online payments and in-clinic payments all in one place.

Stripe FAQs

What’s the difference between Stripe and Stripe Unified?

Stripe Unified is an enhanced version of Stripe that consolidates all payment methods—including online payments and in-clinic transactions via Stripe terminals—into a single, streamlined system.

With WriteUpp’s new partnership with Stripe, switching to Stripe Unified allows us to offer lower transaction rates than before. However, to take advantage of this, you’ll need to onboard a brand-new Stripe Unified account, as previous WriteUpp connections used Standard Stripe accounts.

If you’re already using Stripe, switching to Stripe Unified ensures seamless integration with WriteUpp, unlocks in-clinic card payments using Stripe terminals, and gives you access to the new, reduced transaction fees.

Do I need a separate Stripe account?

To use Stripe with your WriteUpp account, a Stripe Unified account must be onboarded for you from within WriteUpp; you won’t be able to use an existing Stripe account you already have. You will, however, be able to use the same email address as an existing Stripe account and choose to use the same business information; you’ll just receive a new Stripe account and account ID linked to WriteUpp.

What’s the cost of using Stripe Terminals?

There are two main costs to consider:

  1. The Terminal Device – You’ll need to purchase a supported terminal (BBPOS WisePOS E-Reader or Stripe Reader S700), with pricing set by Stripe.
  2. Transaction Fees – Stripe charges a small percentage per transaction, similar to online payments. Exact fees may vary depending on your region, but they are generally competitive with Square and other payment processors.

What payment methods can my clients use?

With Stripe, your clients can pay using major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and more, offering them maximum flexibility and convenience.

Will payments automatically update my invoices?

Yes! Payments made through Stripe automatically update your invoice status in WriteUpp, saving you time and reducing admin tasks.
